Academic paper standard

Watch the videoPrint to an academic standard 00:29

The standard gives the page the form the committee checks — margins, font, line spacing, indent, headings, captions and page numbering — in the PDF, in printing, in Word and in Typst. The writing screen does not change: you keep the theme you like. Turn the feature on in Settings → Features → Academic → Academic paper formatting (standard).

The standards are not bundled: you download the one you use. Tools → Academic paper standard lists those on the website (ABNT NBR 14724, APA 7, Chicago/Turabian, ISO 7144) and those already in the folder. Choosing one copies the file to Templates/Normas/: from then on it is yours, works offline, travels with the work and can be edited — your university's rule is an edited copy. The standard applies to the folder; a note chooses another with layout: in its properties, and layout: none turns it off.

The cover and title page come from the data. In the properties of the binder cover write institution, course, author, title, advisor, city and year; the [cover] and [title page] tokens, each on a line of its own, become the two pages in the form of the standard. A page break is written <div style="page-break-after: always"></div> (what Insert adds) or \newpage; in the editor it shows as a dashed line.

Approval page. The [approval page] token builds the page that ABNT NBR 14724 requires: author, title, nature, “Approved on:” and the examination committee, each member with a signature line. The committee is the committee: list in the cover properties, one member per item, and | breaks the line (Prof. Dr. Smith | Advisor | UFX). With approval-date: the date is printed; without it, a line is left to fill in by hand. Check the standard warns when ABNT asks for the page and it is missing.

The whole work: structure the folder with the Academic paper (with standard) template, which already has the cover, abstract, contents, chapters, references and appendices in the right order. When exporting the folder, check Compile the chapters into one document and choose PDF or Typst: the contents and the lists of figures and tables get page numbers, and numbering starts where the standard says. Tools → Check the standard points out what committees usually send back: abstract out of length, keywords, figure without source, citation without a work, missing cover field.

An example thesis to start from. In Structure the folder, the Example thesis (complete) template creates a whole fictitious work — title page, abstract, contents, chapters with Mermaid diagrams, formulas, tables, citations and references — so you can see the standard at work and copy what helps. A diagram becomes a numbered figure just like a table: right after the fence, write : Figure title {#fig:label}; it goes into the list of figures and can be cited with @fig:label.

Document language: with language: en (or lang:) in the properties of the note or of the binder cover, "Figure", "Contents" and "References" come out in the language of the work, not of the interface, and words are hyphenated by that language's rules. The app's own PDF hyphenates justified text (Portuguese, English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Russian; hyphenate: false turns it off), puts footnotes at the foot of the page, equation numbers in the right margin and tables with open sides. To typeset with Typst, export and compile — version 0.13 or newer is required; the page form comes from the same standard, and diagrams go as images next to the file. In Word, the table of contents and the lists of figures and tables are fields: accept updating the fields when the file opens (in ONLYOFFICE and LibreOffice, click the table of contents and choose Update) for the page numbers to appear.
